How to Convert a Fraction to a Percent

thumbnail
thumbnail
Converting a fraction to a percent takes two steps:

1
Convert the fractions to a decimal.
2
Convert the decimal to a percent.
If the denominator is 10 or 100, then it's a snap!
Convert3 / 10
to a percent:
3 / 10 = .3 = .30 = 30% add a zero onto the .3 making it .30
Convert74 / 100
to a percent:
74 / 100 = .74 = 74%

YOUR TURN:
Convert41 / 100
to a percent:
Convert7 / 10
to a percent:

If you can easily change the denominator to 10 or 100 (or any power of 10), do it!

Convert1 / 5
to a percent:
1 / 5 = ( 1/5 ) x ( 20/20 ) = 20 / 100 = .20 = 20%

TRY IT:
Convert1 / 4
to a percent:

Here's one that's a little trickier:
Convert1 / 16
to a percent:
1 / 16 = ( 1 / 2^4 ) x ( 5^4 / 5^4 ) = 5^4 / 10^4 = 625 / 10,000 = .0625 = 6.25%
Yes, you CAN have a percent
that still has a decimal in the front!

Weird, huh?
So, what happens when you can't make the denominator a pretty power of 10?
Well, we just use long division and do a little rounding.  Let's just make our answers go to one decimal point.
Let's try one:
Convert1 / 3
to a percent:
First, we use long division to convert the fraction to a decimal...
long division work for 1.00 divided by 3
Just like we thought, it's giving a repeating decimal:
1 / 3 = .3333...
So, we can give our answer as
1 / 3 = .333 with a bar over the last 3 = 33.3% with a bar over the last 3
Or we can round off and approximate the answer as
1 / 3 is approximately equal to .33 = 33%
Notice that I used a wavy equals for "approximately equal!"
 Here's another one:

Convert2 / 7
to a percent:
** We'll need to do our long division out to four decimal places to have our percent answer be rounded to one decimal place.  You'll see!
percents05-18.gif
So, 2 /7 is approximately equal to .2857 = 28.57% is approximately equal to 28.6%

TRY IT:
Convert10 / 11
to a percent:
Can you make a good guess first?  How much pizza will this be?

How to Convert a Decimal to a Percent

We just do the same thing as in the last lesson... only backwards!
To convert a decimal to a percent:
1
Convert the decimal to a fraction (using the place value information).
2
Convert the fraction to a percent.
I'm going to do both steps in one line...
Let's go!
Convert .62 to a percent:
.62 = 62 / 100 = 62%  don't simplify the fraction
Convert 3.48 to a percent:
3.48 = 348 / 100 = 348%
Convert .5 to a percent:
Hey, there's only one decimal place on this guy!
No problem.  Just stick a zero on the end and go for it.
percents04-03.gif

YOUR TURN:
Convert 1.25 to a percent.
Convert .36 to a percent.
Convert .4 to a percent.

Once you get good at this, you can just do it in one step:

Convert .18 to a percent:
.18 = 18%
18%
Remember the two circles on the percent symbol that you are converting to...
.18Move the decimal
two places to the right...
18%and put the percent symbol on!

TRY IT:
Convert .62 to a percent.

Here's one that looks weird...  until you think about it a bit:
Convert 1 to a percent:
Think about pizza!
You have one whole pizza...
pizza
That's 100%!
So, don't let those whole numbers confuse you.

TRY IT:
Convert 3 to a percent.
Convert 20 to a percent.

How to Convert a Percent to a Decimal

First, I need to remind you about something with decimals:
Remember place values?
9.3284 the 3 is in the 10ths place, the 2 is in the 100ths place, the 8 is in the 1000ths place and the 4 is in the 10,000ths place
So...
.7 = 7 / 10   and   .23 = 23 / 100 (<-this is the one we need)   and  .389 = 389 / 1000
At first, we'll do this in two steps:
1
Use the word "percent" to convert the percent to a fraction.
2
Use decimal place values to convert the fraction to a decimal.
Let's go!
Convert 42% to a decimal:
Step 1:42% = 42 / 100
Don't simplify the fraction!
Step 2:42 / 100 = .42
So, 42% = .42
We can just do it in one row:

Convert 90% to a decimal:
90% = 90 / 100 = .90
We don't need this end zero.
So, 90% = .9

TRY IT:
Convert 65% to a decimal.

When you get used to this, you can skip that middle part!
Convert 32% to a decimal:
32% = .32
Here's a trick to remember this:
There are two little circles on the percent symbol... So, move the decimal point two places to the left!

YOUR TURN:
Convert 56% to a decimal.
Convert 70% to a decimal.
